KTX vs SRT — What’s the Difference
Two high-speed rail operators run in Korea. Knowing the difference saves confusion at booking time.
KTX is operated by Korail, the national rail company. Departs from Seoul Station and Yongsan Station. Covers most major routes.
SRT is a private operator running on the same high-speed tracks. Departs from Suseo Station in Gangnam and Dongtan. SRT is often slightly cheaper than KTX on the same route. If you’re staying in southern Seoul, Suseo is actually more convenient than Seoul Station.
Before booking, check both. Same journey, sometimes meaningfully different prices. Book KTX at letskorail.com and SRT at srail.kr — both have English interfaces.
How to Book

Korail Website — letskorail.com
English available. International Visa and Mastercard accepted. Book up to 1 month in advance. You receive a QR code by email — screenshot it in case you lose signal at the station.
Korail Talk App
Download before arriving in Korea. English on both iOS and Android. Same booking system as the website but more convenient for last-minute changes while traveling. You can also check live departure boards and platform numbers on the app.
At the Station
Automated ticket machines have English. Counter staff at major stations speak basic English. Walk-in is fine for weekday travel — but popular routes on Friday evenings, Sunday afternoons, and around Korean holidays sell out well in advance. Don’t rely on walk-in during these periods.
Daddy’s Note: Chuseok and Lunar New Year are the two periods where KTX sells out fastest — sometimes within minutes of tickets opening. If your travel dates overlap with these holidays, book the moment tickets become available (usually 1 month before departure).
Seat Classes
Standard Class (일반실): 2+2 seating configuration, good legroom, comfortable for any journey length. This is what most people book and it’s perfectly fine.
First Class (특실): 2+1 seating, wider seats, slightly more recline. About 40–50% more expensive than standard. Worth considering for journeys over 2 hours if you value personal space — not necessary for shorter routes like Seoul to Daejeon.
Window seats: Seoul to Busan on the right side (A seats) gives mountain and countryside views. Left side gets more industrial scenery. Small detail but worth choosing if you care about the view.
How to Save Money
Early booking discount (사전할인): Book exactly 1 month before departure for up to 30% off standard fare. These discounted tickets are non-refundable — only book if your dates are confirmed.
Youth discount: Ages 13–25 get 30% off with valid ID. Must show ID when boarding.
KR Pass: Unlimited KTX travel for foreigners over consecutive days — 2, 3, 4, or 5 day options. Worth buying only if you’re doing multiple intercity trips in a short period. For a single Seoul-Busan round trip, do the math first — two individual tickets with early booking discount often cost less.
Off-peak travel: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday departures are generally cheaper and less crowded than weekend trains.
Which Station in Seoul
This is where most first-timers get confused. Check your ticket carefully.
- Seoul Station (서울역): Central Seoul, Lines 1 and 4. Most KTX trains depart from here.
- Yongsan Station (용산역): Some KTX trains, particularly to the southwest. Line 1, one stop from Seoul Station.
- Suseo Station (수서역): SRT only. Gangnam area, Line 3 and Bundang Line. Convenient if you’re staying south of the Han River.
- Cheongnyangni Station (청량리역): KTX trains to Gangneung (east coast) and some northern routes. Line 1.
At the Station — Step by Step
- Arrive 15–20 minutes before departure
- Check the departure board for your train number and platform
- Scan your QR code at the platform gate
- Find your car number — marked on the platform floor and on signs overhead
- Large luggage goes in the overhead rack or end-of-car storage area — get on early to claim space
Food and WiFi on Board
Most KTX trains have a dining car selling snacks, sandwiches, and drinks. Prices are higher than convenience stores — buy food before boarding if you want to save money. Free WiFi is available on board; speed is adequate for basic browsing.
The Seoul to Busan journey is 2 hours 10 minutes. Bringing your own food is easy and practical — convenience stores at Seoul Station have a good selection right before the platforms.
Luggage Delivery Service
Korail offers a luggage delivery service — your bags are picked up from your accommodation in the morning and delivered to your destination hotel or station by the time you arrive. Book through the Korail website at least one day in advance. Useful if you’re moving between cities and don’t want to manage large bags on the train.
Cancellation and Changes
Regular tickets can be cancelled or changed before departure with a fee — the closer to departure, the higher the fee. Full refund if cancelled more than a day before. Early booking discounted tickets are non-refundable. Check the current fee schedule on letskorail.com before buying discounted tickets if your plans might change.

- Standard class is perfectly comfortable — first class is a nice upgrade, not a necessity
- Download Korail Talk before arriving in Korea
- Holiday periods sell out fast — book immediately when tickets open
